Pyrethroids (e.g.; Permethrin, Phenothrin)

Pyrethroids are synthetic and not natural pyrethrin compounds.  Unlike Pyrethrins, they are made in the laboratory and not extracted naturally from plants. Common synthetic pyrethrins are allethrin, resmethrin, phenothrin, and permethrin. Phenothrin and Permethrin are the two most commonly found in products used to control fleas and ticks. Permethrin and phenohrin are slower in action than the natural pyrethrins, but have a longer effect.

Like Pyrethrins, these synthetic chemicals also act on the nervous system of insects. And since they have longer acting effects, they are more commonly found in sprays use for killing fleas and ticks in the premises rather than on pets.

*Caution: Permethrins are highly toxic to cats and should NOT be used on cats or kittens. Signs of toxicity from Permethrins can be observed within 6 hours after application.

Products containing Permethrins

Adams Room Fogger with Sykillstop (6oz)

Adams Carpet Spray (16oz)

Bio Spot for Dogs 15 to 33 lbs.

Organophosphates (and organocarbamates)

Organophosphates and organocarbamates are another class of drugs that have been widely used as insecticides for fleas and ticks. Commonly used organophosphates and organocarbamates include dichlorvos, cythioate (Proban tablet), diazinon, malathion, carbaryl (Sevin), fenthione, methylcarbamate and prolate.

Its mode of action is also on the nervous system.

A word of caution in using organophosphates is that they are they most likely to cause toxic reactions in pets. Pets poisoned by these chemicals will experience tremor, salivation, stagger and even seizure. As there many safer products available, I would strongly recommend that pet owners avoid using products containing these chemicals and they include:

Note: Products in regular type are those registered with EPA as of June 3, 2000. Asterisks indicate pet products known to form the basis for EPA?s risk assessment for that chemical. Dichlorvos, diazinon and malathion risk assessments did not list particular products. Italicized products are those for which, subsequent to the risk assessment, manufacturers now indicate they will no longer maintain registration of the product. In most, if not all such cases, however, the products remain in use at the time this report was prepared.
