Flea Bite Treatment
Flea Bite Treatment For Human
Treatment of flea bites mainly involved treating of the allergic reaction and symptoms. These are mainly the inflammation and itch caused by the bites.
For more severe cases whereby the whole body may be affected, your doctor may prescribed an oral steroid and antihistamine to stop the inflammation and itch more effectively. However, for mild to moderate conditions, the use of over-the-counter itch stopping products like Calamine lotion or some anti-itch cream would normally suffice.
Frequent scratching of the affected area may lead to infection in some people and if the area around the flea bites are infected, it may be swollen and painful. Once an infection of the affected area is seen, the use of an antibiotic cream may be needed instead.
Flea Bite Treatment For Pets
For pet owners, the easy choice would be to apply a topical steroid cream on the affected area. This no doubt will help to relief the dermatitis and itch fast but I would strongly encourage the use of natural products that are readily available in the market for pets instead. These natural products work just as well but without side effects associated with the use of steroids.
I highly recommend the use of a wonderful natural oil call Neem.
Neem oil comes from neem tree (obviously) which has long been known as the wonder tree in India. Traditionally, the bark, leaves and the oil extracted from the neem seeds have been used as remedies against infections, diarrhoea and numerous skin diseases or disorders. Because of its wide range of application, it has been known as the "Friend and Protector of the Indian Villager"
I first came to know of this wonderful oil through a friend whom I was chatting one fine day when I mentioned that my dog is having a real bad patch on her thigh. I have seen tiny fleas on her and thought that is most likely the cause of her "eczema-like" inflammation. She scratches herself too frequently because of the intense itch and this has resulted in a balding patch on her. My friend handed me a bottle and on it was stated "100% Neem Oil".
I applied the neem oil directly on the bald patch and then rub some throughout her body and the effect of this oil on her was almost immediate! The itch seems to stop and her bald patch continued to improve over the next few weeks. Well, it's gone now and her soft silky fur is back to where it belongs. Another benefit to the use of neem oil is that it is also a natural flea repellent.

However, a word of caution. The smell of Neem Oil may be a bit overwhelming for some people. It has a pungent garlic, sulfur smell. However, if you can't stand the smell, there are plenty of other products containing neem oil as it's active ingredient but without the pungent smell. Here are a few:
Bite This! Flea Remedy contains a combination of essential oils and Neem oil which can simply be rubbed onto the fur coat of your pet.
Neem Aura Herbal Pet Spray besides containing neem oil also include aloe vera which helps to sooth irritated or inflamed skin.
It's particularly important that you use a mild and soothing shampoo for your dog or cat now. I find both Epi-Soothe Shampoo 16 Oz by Virbac and Vet Solutions Aloe & Oatmeal Shampoo 16 Oz very good. The oatmeal and aloe vera in both of these shampoos are excellent for skin disorders especially for dry, itching and inflamed skin.
Oral supplements is also important in maintaining healthy skin and coat of your pet. I find the PetAlive Skin and Coat Tonic offered by Native Remedies an excellent product. It's a combination of especially selected herbs, nutrients and biochemic tissue salts known for their tonic and healing effect on the skin and hair. Another great product that have received very good feedback from users is Health Concerns Skin Balance which is a Chinese herbal remedy made specially for skin problem is dogs and cats. I put my dog Bobo on a daily dose of the tonic and her bald patch caused by the flea bites as well as her overall skin and coat show mark improvement after about 2 weeks. She is also more energetic and active. Previously, she sleeps throughout the day and only wakes up during mealtime. She is 12 yrs now and still behaves like a little puppy!
We have also found that adding both Brewer's Yeast and garlic into the their daily diet has help to keep flea infestation under control. A product that contains both of these in one tablet is Like Treats Brewer's Yeast & Garlic Tablets which helps boost immunity and repellant to fleas.
Success in treating the fleas bites reaction and symptoms is by no means an end to your problem. The fleas population would have to be kept under control if not eradicated completely or else, you would expect to see the same problem recurring again. To do so, treating both your pets and the environment are essential to controlling the problem which brings us to the next important section covering Flea Treatment for pets, house, garden and yards
