Frontline Flea Control

The active ingredient

Frontline: Fipronil

Frontline Plus: Fipronil and Methoprene

Manufacturer: Merial

Application: to be applied in the form of a topical solution. A Spot-on treatment

Frequency of Treatment: Once a month

Suitable for: Dogs, puppies> 10 weeks old and cats & kittens > 12 weeks of age . Not approved for use on pregnant and nursing mother dogs and cats.

Onset of action: 42 hours to zero fleas counted (24 hours to spread all over animal’s body and 18 hours to kill the fleas).

Duration of action: Effect can last for a month for fleas and ticks in cats but can last up to 3 months for fleas in dogs

Waterproof: Yes. this product remains topical but is stored in the oil secreting glands of the skin. If the pet gets wet, the skin layer of product can be washed off but will be replaced as the oil producing glands re-secrete it. However, manufacturer recommends waiting 2 days after bathing before applying. The product can be applied sooner but will take longer to spread over the body if there is inadequate oil on the skin as would be the case just after a bath.

Mode of action: For Frontline, active against all common ticks species in dogs and all adult fleas and larvae only. For Frontline Plus, active against all ticks, adult fleas and all fleas larvae and eggs.

Frontline is considered safe to be use on sick, elderly and debilitated pets provided they are on medical treatment as well. However, it must be noted that because of the restricted movement of such pets, the spread of Frontline around the whole body may not be as rapid as usual. The onset of action may hence be longer than usual.

Frontline spray is also available and may be more cost effective especially if you have more than one pet. Precaution have to be taken when using the spray like the need to wear gloves, avoiding spraying into the eye etc. It is also a lot messier and is not recommended for those with asthma and respiratory disorders. Many would prefer the use of the frontline spot on variety as it comes in single tube form and application is simple by just squeezing the content onto the skin between the shoulder blades.
