Kitten Flea Control – How to get rid of fleas on kittens?

Cats get infested with fleas so can kittens, especially if you have a flea infested mom nursing her kittens.

Very Often, cat owners have no qualms when they need to de-flea an adult cat but when it comes to doing it on little kittens especially one who is less than 6 weeks of age, they simply have no idea how to go about getting rid of these pesky creatures from the kittens.

“Don’t use Flea collars, they are too young”

“You can’t bath them using flea shampoo!”

“No, you can apply those flea sprays on them”

Advices like those above could further add on to the confusion of a helpless kitten owner.

Can’t blame them because kittens are such “delicate” little things and one single wrong application of harmful chemicals on them could kill them.

So what effective and safe kitten flea control products are available for use on these young kittens?

Fleas are a menace to the kittens’ health. They could suffer from severe anemia and even death having the blood-sucking fleas on them. So getting rid of these pests is absolutely necessary.

It’s true that most of the commercially available flea products are too strong for use on kittens. Here is method that many have tried and found to be safe and effective.

Dawn Dishwashing Liquid

Yes, it may sound strange but it does help in getting rid of fleas. Here is what you can do.

First, fill up your basin tub with warm water, then add in a few drops of Dawn detergent and mix well.

Next, submerge your kitten into the tub of detergent water making sure that it reaches up to the neck region. Keep it in the water while you massage the soapy water all over its body. Use a towel soaked in the detergent water to clean parts of the body kept above the water level like the head, ears and face. Make sure that you don’t get the soapy water into the eyes of the kittens. Keep it submerge for a couple of minutes before taking it out. Rinse it well with warm water before wrapping it up with a towel to dry.

The Dawn detergent would have killed most of the fleas but you may still see a few live fleas. Using a fine-tooth flea comb, comb through the hair. The fleas will be trapped between the flea comb. Soak the comb in some hot water to kill the fleas.

Towel dry the kitten and blow-dry if needed making sure that it doesn’t catch a cold.

For older kittens, those that are more than 6 weeks of age, there are some spot-on topical solutions that are claimed to be safe. Manufacturer of Revolution, Pfzier, has claimed that Revolution is safe for use on kittens more than 6 weeks of age while Merial stated in its product leaflets that Frontline can be used on kittens more than 12 weeks of age.

Nevertheless, for use of all flea control products, it is important to keep a lookout for adverse reaction after its use. If in doubt, you should always check with your vet first.
