Sentinel Flea Control
Sentinel tablet contains two active ingredients namely Lufenuron, an insect growth inhibitor and Milbemycin, a parasitic insecticide. This combination makes Sentinel the drug of choice when the following treatments are intended:
- Heartworm prevention
- Intestinal deworming
- Flea control
Milbemycin kills off the immature form of the heartworm and also control hookworms, roundworm and whip worms.
Lufenuron will break the life cycle of the fleas by preventing the development of eggs into larvae. It however does not kill adult fleas. As such, Sentinel is only effective as a preventive measure against fleas and should be given before the dog is infested with fleas. Hence it's recommended that Sentinel be given early in spring before the flea season begins in summer. Once you detect fleas on your dogs, the use of an external insecticides sprays and spot-on like Advantix, Revolution, Advantage & Frontline will be necessary in order control flea population effectively.
As like all heartworm medication, Sentinel requires a prescription. It is given once a month with food for better absorption. Sentinel tablets are favoured and dogs seems to like it and take it readily. However, before taking Sentinel, dogs have to be tested for heartworm to ensure that they are not infested. This is needed because if dog is infested with heartworm and treated with Sentinel, complication and adverse reactions may occur.
Sentinel is safe to use on dogs and puppies more than 4 weeks of age and weighing more than 2 pounds.
You can purchase Sentinel online with a prescription from a vet
