The author of “SoapMaking For Fun & Profit” Maria Nerius, has written it with two purposes in mind. Firstly it introduces you to the fun of making homemade soap and secondly it provides the valuable advices of how you can convert this home hobby into a thriving business.

And just about when you are having fun making those soaps, you are provided with clear instructions on how you can convert those creations of yours into some extra cash for yourself! Barbara teaches you ways on how you can sell your creations at craft shows, shops and other outlets. Also, you’ll be taught how you should price your soaps and how you should keep records of your sales etc.

As a beginner, you would find this book particularly useful because you’ll be given a short history in how soap comes about and a thorough explanation on the different oils, fats, butters and scents used in making soaps. You will even get a section on the aromatherapy characteristics of fragrance and essential oils.

There is also a section that covers the importance of knowing the sponifications values or numbers which is the crucial in soap making These values represent the amount, in milligrams, of lye needed to convert an oil/fat molecule into a single gram of soap and they varies based on the types of oils/fats being used in the recipe.  

There aren’t however, a lot of recipes given in this book if that’s what you are looking for. There are a couple of them to get you started but mostly it encourages you to create your own recipes after being taught on the basics.  

If you are looking to expanding your hobby further into a business, then you would the information in this book valuable as it covers basically all you need to know on the business aspect of soap making. Included in much detail is information on the licenses and permits, copyrights laws and rights, FDA labeling rules, taxes laws and much more.   

Overall, “this is a well-written and well researched book. It’s simple to follow and it has been highly recommended for new soapmakers.
